The game is won by either conquering all other civilizations or by achieving a high enough score that the other civilizations are unable to catch up. The player must expand their civilization by founding new cities, building structures in those cities, and researching technologies. In Sid Meier's Civilization, the player takes on the role of the ruler of a civilization, starting with a single city and its surrounding area.
